Goodluck is new X-Class King of the ranges; Ramalho takes O-Class
By Franklin Wilson
Veteran marksman Ransford Goodluck held off stiff challenges from his rivals Lennox Braithwaite and Mahendra Persaud to win the X-Class (Premiere) of the Guyana National Rifle Association 2013 Fullbore Shooting Championships which ended yesterday at the Timehri Rifle Ranges, Yarrowkabra, Linden Soesdyke Highway.
Heading into the final day, deciding a winner was too close to call and as anticipated, and the winner was only decided on the final range at 1000 yards. Goodluck and Braithwaite were so close at all the ranges contested yesterday that only V Bulls separated the two in the final analysis, the new champ’s one point advantage from the second day doing the trick for him when the smoke has cleared.
Leo Ramalho, returning to active competition after an 11-year hiatus, called on his vast experience to edge past former champion Lt. Col. Terrance Stuart in another close battle to win the O-Class by a single point.
But the surprise package of the day was Ryan Sampson, who before yesterday was not in the best of form, but like the dark horse of the championships bolted from a not too good position to win the 600 Yards, 1000 Yards and Day Aggregate in fine style; Dylan Fields, who also did not enjoy the best of form, won the 500 Yards shoot.
Sampson racked up 48 Points and 3Vbulls at 600; 46 Points and 2V’s at 1000 to end with 128 Points and 6V’s overall when his score of 34 Points and 1V was added which enabled him to win the day day’s proceedings much to his delight. Fields recorded 35 Points and 1V to win the 500 Yards shoot.
The day’s competition was held in testing conditions with winds varying left to right in an overcast atmosphere for much of the day.
The circumstances did not deter the country’s marksmen but brought out the best in them as they battled to out-shoot each other. Like predicted before, it went down to the final shoot at 1000 Yards Range, where pretenders never flourish.
Goodluck recorded scores of 34-4; 48-3; 45-1 for a day aggregate of 127-8. His nearest rival, Braithwaite notched up scores of 34-2; 48-2; 45-2 to total on the day, 127-6, that’s how close the competition was.
When the final scores were tabulated over the three days, Goodluck recorded 341-27 agonizingly winning from Braithwaite whose final score read, 340 Points and 24V Bulls.
Ramalho’s Grand Aggregate read 315 Points and 16V Bulls, while Stuart’s final figures read, 314 Points 9V Bulls.
While the competition was fierce on all three days, the main aim of the competitors is to whip themselves into top shape, first, for the visit of the powerful British Team this month end and the West Indies Fullbore Championships set for the Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados, next month.
Guyana is the defending champion at the Short and Long Ranges. This year’s championship is expected to attract competition from Canada, Australia and Great Britain.
Following are the scores on day 3 and the Grand Aggregate (the combined scores from all 3 days)
