Yesterday morning, the principals of that team and those of the runners up team, Slingerz FC, convened at City Hall where patron of the tournament, Mayor Hamilton Green, handed over the respective prizes before delivering the keynote address.
Mr. Green lauded the Mr. Arthur for a well organized tournament and the winners for their sterling achievement. He also had kind words for the Slingerz team saying that their participation is refreshing since it represents the participation of teams outside of Georgetown. “And I have always advocated the real development can only be measured by all round participation,” said Mr. Green.
The Mayor also noted the input of members of the private sector and had special words for the proprietor of Two Brothers Gas Station. He said that this business operates in several parts of the country with an outlet on the West Coast and the fact that the proprietors have acquiesced to support, demonstrates an understanding of their corporate responsibilities. “Without such sponsorship, football would lose its luster,” exhorted Mr. Green.
Mayor Green noted that legislators are currently focusing on the budget and feels that now is a good time to beseech them to demonstrate an understanding of the football community. “I would like to implore our decision makers to see the game from a broader perspective otherwise football would be stagnated,” chided the Mayor. He also advocated a need for football administrators to pay attention to the nursery. “I would like to see programmes that incorporates players from as young as 3 years old,” said Mr. Green. He envisaged that such ploys could result in future national teams consisting of solely locals instead of mostly overseas based players.
