Only last week when Kaieteur Sport grilled President of the Alpha United FC, Odinga Lumumba, for a prognosis of the four aspirants contesting the Presidency of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), he said that it would have been refreshing if the aspirants could have experimented on a unified position where all parties would have determined beforehand on their respective roles.
Lumumba feels that each of the Presidential hopefuls could have contributed to the progression of the sport in unique ways. Now, less than two weeks after that prognosis, Lumumba has thrown his weight behind Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major and has endorsed him for the prestigious Presidential post.
Lumumba made the revelation when he hosted a press brief at the Waterchris Hotel, Waterloo Street Georgetown yesterday morning. “I have spoken to all four individuals and assessed their qualities and have concluded that Mr. Major is the man for the job,” said Lumumba.
He said that the person to lead the sport must be in a position to foster development of the clubs and players and in this capacity his choice is above the other three competitors.
He said that he was initially tempted to go with Permanent Secretary, Alfred King but to his mind that individual lacked the requisite administrative skills. He said that King has refused to denounce Klass’ indiscretions and as such does not merit the position.
“He should have been more vigilant and outspoken,” contends Lumumba. He said that Mr. Major has served in the Klass administration as the Organizing Secretary and has failed to be critical of Klass’ management style.
However, Lumumba said that Major’s astute organizing skills were responsible for the acquisition of much needed funding for the sport. He said that Major was also instrumental in the development of local players and was the major cog in their acquisition of contracts to play in overseas clubs.
Lumumba said that it is refreshing that Major opted to unselfishly resign from the Kashif and Shanghai organization to concentrate on the development of national football.
He also said that Mr. Major has assured him that once elected he will attempt to bring an amicable solution to the impasse between the K&S organization and the Georgetown Football Association on the issue of the organizing of their respective year end tournaments.
“When all is taken into consideration, I have decided that Mr. Major is the best man to lead local football,” concluded Lumumba.
