The Assuria Invitational Tennis Classic which is scheduled to serve off today is the opening event on the Guyana Tennis Association 2013 calendar.
According to a release, the tournament is being sponsored by Suriname’s Assuria Weisenager and would comprise three categories, Men’s and Women’s Singles and Men’s over 35 singles. The tournament would be played on a round robin basis with the top two progressing to the finals in each category.
The tournament, the first of its kind in Guyana, would be played at two venues around Georgetown, beginning at the Racquet Center, Woolford Avenue and at the Diamond Tennis Center, Diamond strictly on weekends with the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th of April identified as the dates.
Some of Guyana’s top senior players such as Jeremy Miller, Carlos Adams, Carol Humphrey, Duane Lopes, Leyland Leacock, Harry Panday and Shawna Gentle will be participating in the competition.
First Vice-President Grace McCalman noted that it is one of those tournaments where most of the country’s top players will be on show and urged supporters of the sport to come out and view what is anticipated to be some exciting tennis.
She highlighted that the tournament’s main aim is to build and create awareness and set a platform for tennis on the East Bank of Demerara, adding that it could also signal the beginning of a great work relationship with the Diamond tennis club officials.
Meanwhile, the fixtures for the opening day are as follows:
Harry Panday versus Mario Niamatalli in an Over 35 matchup starting at 09:00 hrs
Anthony Downes vs. Leyland Leacock in a Men’s Open encounter, also from 09:00 hrs
Jeremy Miller vs. Gavin Lewis in a Men’s Open affair
Anthony Downes vs. Daniel Lopes Men’s Open clash
Carlos Adams vs. Rudy Grant in an Over 35 battle
Godfrey Lowden vs. Harry Panday in an Over 35 matchup
