Charlestown Secondary edged out Christ Church Secondary 2-1 as the tournament phase of the Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy kicked off Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.
Omari James netted a double for Charlestown in the 27th and 62nd minutes of play, while Andre Trotz scored the lone goal for Charlestown.
Earlier, there was an official opening ceremony attended by Scotia Bank Country Manager, Amanda St. Aubyn, DDL Marketing Director Sharda Veeren-Chand, Guyana Sports Development Foundation Director John Yates, Allison Rollins of the Ministry of Education, Vanessa Dickinson of the Guyana Football Federation and Alfred King of the Guyana Football Referees Council.
Both St. Aubyn and Veeren-Chand said that their companies were excited to be sponsoring the Academy for a third year. St. Aubyn disclosed that Scotia Bank was extremely heartened especially to see the Academy being expanded to include Berbice and Linden.
She called on the children to make full use of the opportunity afforded them and to be dedicated and disciplined.
Veeren-Chand said that Pepsi was pleased to be partnering with the Academy as it provides students with the opportunity to promote positive development. Rollins, King and Dickinson also encouraged the students to enhance their skills on the field and at the same time develop their academic abilities.
Yates gave a brief history of the Academy and expressed gratitude to all the stakeholders especially main sponsors Scotia Bank and Pepsi. He also lauded the contributions of the GFF, Ministries of Education and Sport.
Similar tournaments are being played in Linden and Berbice. The Linden tournament was also opened Saturday, while Berbice will kick off next Saturday.
The Schools competing in Georgetown are Queen’s College, Lodge, North Georgetown, New Campbellville Secondary, Central High, Tutorial, School of the Nations, St. Stanislaus College, Tucville Secondary, Christ Church, Bishop’s High and St. George’s.
Eight of these schools are fielding female teams.
