Two-time Caribbean junior champion Nyron Joseph served up under-19 campaigner Steven Xavier to a straight-game beating to capture the Category A title on the final day of the Toucan Industries Kool Aid Junior Skill Level Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Georgetown Club’s Squash Facility.
Both players entered the final day with an unbeaten streak in the toughest category of the tournament, but Joseph emerged victorious and was adjudged most outstanding male player. Meanwhile, Akeila Wiltshire, who played unbeaten to win category B, was the most outstanding female player of the tournament.
Joseph held his composure to overcome an early deficit and complete an impressive win in the first game. The two players have had a history of testing matches against each other and their competitive energies got the best of them in the second game. Joseph, who won the Caribbean under-17 title last year seemed, more hungry, more focussed and took a commanding 2-0 lead with a decisive second game win. In the third game, Joseph jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Xavier kept committing unforced errors point after point. Xavier would come as close as 5-6 before Joseph regained momentum and won the match in straight-game fashion.
Joseph played the tournament undefeated in matches and only lost one game during his five matches. The impressive run comes less than a month after Joseph was stunned by Nicholas Narain in the quarterfinals of the Bounty Farm Mash Handicap tournament.
Benjamin Mekdeci placed third in category A and was named most improved player of the tournament, while Taylor Fernandes who finished fourth in category B was the most improved female of the tournament.
Shomari Wiltshire won category C ahead of Matthew Phang while Mahendra Khusial placed third. Sarah Lewis challenged Daniel Islam in their category D showdown that lasted the full five games, but Islam defended his unbeaten streak well to win the category. Lewis placed second while Michael Ramroop from the afterschool programme at the National Racquet Centre placed third. Following the tournament, the players from the afterschool programme were awarded grips for their racquets, squash balls and protective goggles.
Kelly Ann Latchman dominated Category E, while Jael Gaskin from the afterschool programme placed second and Gianni Carpenter edged out Maya Collins in a two-way tie for third place. Demetrius DeAbreu won category F ahead of Ethan Jonas and Madison Fernandes respectively. Later this week, the Guyana Squash Association is expected to name the junior squad to begin training for the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Caribbean Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in July this year.
