The matches’ tomorrow night at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Bourda in the opening quarterfinal round of matches in the annual Mayor’s knockout football tournament promises to be exciting with teams having all to play for.
The double header opens with Alpha United taking on home team GFC at 18:30hrs, while Slingerz of the West side tackle Camptown in the second match at 20:30 hrs.
GFC, who have been in giant killing mode in this tournament, sending packing Premier League sides BV Triumph United and Western Tigers in the preliminary stage, will hope to remain in that mode against Alpha.
They will bank on a team effort led by leading players Gregory Denny, Dexter Rutherford, Dellon Cadogan, Teashawn Blackman, Reshawn Sandiford and Sherwin Pinder. However, Alpha is not the number one club by chance. They have the firepower and ability as they have shown for some time now. With the likes of Richard Reynolds in goal, Travis Grant, Bevon Mosley, Andrew Murray, Dwight Peters, Gregory Richardson and Anthony Abrams in the lineup GFC are in for a dog fight.
Slingerz of the Westside are hopeful of sometime in the near future taking Alpha’s place as the country’s number one team. They have a lot of work to do to reach that status, but they will be hopeful they can progress to the semis of this tournament against Camptown, a team known to perform in money tournaments. Slingerz will have Dwayne Jacobs, Joshua Brown, Anthony Harding, Tichard Joseph, Andre Hector and Kester Jacobs to spearhead their challenge.
Camptown under the eye of former player Troy Prescod and company, will look to skipper Reshawn Sandiford, Lennox Charles, Devon Forde, Telson McKinnon, Joel Bond and Travis Martin to take the fight to Slingerz. A tooth and nail kind of battle is promised.
Thursday, the quarterfinals continue at the same venue and times with Santos opposing Den Amstel, while Fruta Conquerors battle GDF. The respective semis will be contested on Sunday March 31 with the final and third place playoff set for April 7.
The winner in this tournament will cart off $1,000,000, while the runner up will take home $500,000; the third and fourth place finishers will receive $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
The sponsors on board so far are 2 Brothers gas station, Mohamed’s Enterprise, General Equipment Guyana Ltd, Bakewell, Guyana Beverage Inc and MaCorp.
