An intruder got the surprise of his life early Thursday morning when he was caught red- handed in an unfinished building which houses millions of dollars worth of automobile spare parts. The intruder, who is said to be a known character in the Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara village, was shot once in the left leg after he attempted to attack the armed businessman with a piece of wood.
Forty- two-year-old Ronald Capelle, proprietor of Turbo Diesel spares and
repairs, said he awoke around 2:30 hours Thursday to the sound of barking dogs. He said the racket was such that he decided to check out what was happening on his property, knowing that there is an unfinished structure in front of his yard with millions of dollars worth of parts such as alternators, tyres and gear boxes inside.
Capelle said that when he entered the building he saw the stranger amongst the valuables and shouted to the man that he must not move. At that time, he said, his family was also at his side.
When the assailant looked up at him, Capelle said he reminded the thief not to move, but the man started to look about for something with which to arm himself.
Capelle said that the man found a piece of wood and started to approach him. That is when the businessman said he had no choice but to shoot, striking the thief in his left leg. The man fell to the ground and the police were summoned.
The injured man was taken by police officers to the West Demerara Hospital where he remains in stable condition. A report was later given at the Wales Police Station and the alleged thief is expected to be charged soon.
