– Carmel does the same against Chase Academy
It was anticipated to be a slugfest and so it was and in the end slight underdogs St. George’s prevailed 3-2 on penalty kicks after regulation period and overtime failed to break a 3-3 deadlock in their clash against Charlestown yesterday in the Milo / Petra Organisation Under-20 Schools Football Competition, at Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
In the opening encounter, prolific goalscorer Marlon Nedd booted in all of Carmel goals in their clash against Chase Academy.
The feature clash was a scorching affair and even though the first half failed to produce any goals, St. George’s dominated the period, hitting the crossbar and uprights on at least three occasions.
The start of the second period was the beginning of a toe-to-toe war and Charlestown netted as early as the first minute when Anthony Bartholomew was fouled inside the penalty area, resulting in a spot kick being awarded. The ensuing penalty was scored by Shane Morris.
Four minutes later, Bartholomew was the one who netted off a similar infraction commited by a St. George’s defender.
However, undaunted by the setback, St. George’s attacked with menace and got their reward in the 57th minute when Okenie Codrington beat the goalkeeper from close range.
They added another goal in the 70th minute when Ossie Small received a short pass just about 25 metres out and hammered a fierce right-footer past the backline and goalkeeper into the back of the net.
It was now game on as both teams attacked relentlessly for the ascendancy and it was Charles twon, who regained the advantage through Morris who netted from a goalmouth scrimmage to complete a brace in the 83rd minute of play.
Just as it looked as though they would hold on for the win, St. George’s won a penalty in the dying moments of the game and Quacy Lawrence strode uo and placed it into the back of the net to level the proceedings which stayed even until the whistle sounded.
The 20 minutes extra time failed to break the deadlock, sending the contest into overtime, before St. Geoge’s prevailed to move into the semi-finals.
Earlier, Nedd scored all four of the goals for Carmel as they beat Chase Academy to book a place in the semi finals.
Nedd netted in the 43rd, 52nd, 59th and 76th minutes and has now placed himself in pole position for the Most Valuable player award.
On target for Chase Academy was Stephen Sankar, who continued his good form, scoring in the 22nd min & 68th minutes and Isaiah Reddy 60th.
