Chief Engineer (ag) Lloyd Alleyne of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) says that works on sluices/ kokers are being carried out in preparation for May/June rains since the tide table shows extremely high tides are occurring every month in the morning and afternoon periods.
The M&CC is responsible for kokers from Kingston to Agricola.
“These are between the hours of 3:00 hours and 4:00 hours and between 16:00 and 17:00 hrs as much as 3.5 meters above the bar. The necessary preparations are being made especially from the Ministry of Works, Local Government and other agencies,” he noted.
Yesterday, the city engineer and a team descended on a sluice behind the Guyana Forestry Commission and carried out the necessary service.
He explained, last year, that the koker door had some problems which resulted in the bottom board being damaged. It was replaced but the door was twisted because when there is problem with closing the door a machine is used to put pressure on top of the door to force it down.
Yesterday, another plank was used to correct the further damages at the bottom of the koker door.
“What we have to do now is make sure the operators controlling the door do not contribute to damaging the door. While the door is going down, the brakes should always be on, so the door does not fall on the concrete bottom with its own weight which damages the door.”
“Complaints reveal that some of the operators tend to loose the brakes allowing it to come down with its own weight.”
Adding that all obstructions under the door were removed, the Chief Engineer (ag) said that previously, even a metal plate was found to be jamming the proper closure of the koker door. There were also a pile of silt and pebbles.
“This door should be closed on time so there is no water pressure on the door when it is going down. And they must not loose the brake so that the door would slam down.”
He further underscored that works on the sluice doors will commence with them being tarred and serviced.
The door of the Cummings Koker in Kingston was recently destroyed by the spring tides. Water flowed freely from the Demerara River through the koker swamping several streets in northwestern Kingston. Works are presently being done to replace that door.
