Uitvlugt and Den Amstel record opening victories
The Annual Mayor’s knockout football tournament continues today with a double header at the Den Amstel ground on the West Coast of Demerara from 6:30pm. This follows opening action where Uitvlugt and Den Amstel were on winners row at the expense of Police and Riddim Squad.
In tonight’s action Stewartville take on the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the first encounter, while Slingerz battle Northern Rangers in the nightcap.
Stewartville, one of the top Westside teams, will depend on the talents of Owen McGarrell, Donald Bobb, Terrence Bobb, Earl McDonald, Denzil Charles and Kenon Brandt to spearhead their challenge. GDF will hope to produce an impressive performance to upstage the home side and will need Royan Morrison, Dellon Young, Desford Williams, Delwyn Fraser and Eusi Phillips to fire on all cylinders.
Slingerz, the new kids on the block who have started out by making an impression, will depend on Tichard Joseph, Anthony Harding, Dwain Jacobs, Kester Jacobs, Orville Bobb, Pierre Joseph and Andre Hector to lead their challenge. They are expected to get full support from the Westside fans as the home grown outfit coached by former national Gordon Braithwaite seek that upward climb they set out to achieve.
Undaunted, Northern Rangers will have the talents of Omali Nassy, Gavin Bobb, Michael Burnett, Pedin Fowler and Shawn Layne to call on in the hope of upstaging Slingerz.
The tournament continues Wednesday with another double header instead of Monday as was originally advertised. The venue is the GFC and Camptown face Golden Grove, while Fruta Conquerors battle Mahaica.
Meanwhile, the tournament commenced last Friday at Den Amstel with Uitvlugt and the home team recording 2-0 wins in their respective matches to start things off.
Uitvlugt through goals from Delon Lanferman (33) and Jamal Petty (68) turned back the challenge of Police.
Den Amstel upset the Rhythm of Riddim Squad thanks to strikes from Jeffrey Perreira in the 38th minute and Ronald Hutson in the 41st.
The winner of the competition will take home $1,000,000 while the runner up will receive $500,000. The third and fourth place teams will be given $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
