Johanna Alexandra Duncan,a/k Teacher Kate, celebrated her 101st birth anniversary on February 19,last,in Canada with a simple ceremony with four of her five remaining children and many grandchildren.
While much emphasis was placed on putting on a grand celebration for her 100th birth anniversary, her son, Hector Duncan, said that her 101st birth anniversary was a simple ceremony.
Mrs. Duncan, nee Brummel , is still active and at her age, is not stricken with any life threatening ailments.
Teacher Kate, as her peers used to call her, migrated to Canada over a decade ago.
Prior to her migration Mrs. Duncan lived with her now deceased husband, Charles Adolphus Duncan, at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, and was an active Mother’s Union member of the St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
The couple lived for almost 40 years before her husband died on October17, 1978. Their marriage produced five children— four are alive today.
Johanna Alexandra Duncan was born at Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast,  to John and Princess Brummel. Mrs. Duncan, her son added, is the lone survivor of six siblings.
Johanna, whose interests were primarily focused on education, began her teaching career and taught at the St. Barnabas Anglican at Dartmouth, from an early age.
She worked as an educator for 32 years, managed a cafeteria and owned and operated a pre-school establishment, where she nurtured and prepared young boys and girls, who today have acquired  success.
“Faith in God, the kindness and loving care for those who surround her and her commitment to living”, was her attribution to her longevity.
The years have taken a toll on her physical form but her faith has never wavered, her son stressed.
Mrs. Duncan has an addition of 20 grandchildren, 18 great grands, and one great, great grand to her family unit.
