Tirana Mitchell and Jason Yaw clocked fast times on the second day of the junior Carifta trials yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna to sound a warning to other sprinters.
Mitchell enjoyed a quick start to close down the staggers early then easily held off the field to qualify for the junior Carifta Games in Bahamas in April. She clocked 24.5s eclipsing the Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) qualifying standard of 25.0s. Avon Samuels was second (25.0s) and Onassah Rogers (25.3s) third.
The over six foot Yaw took the male version, opening a gap on the field to run home in 21.7s to qualify. Compton Caesar (22.7) followed in second.
The female under-20 event resulted in Tiffany Carto (24.5s) recording a comfortable victory ahead of Letitia Myles (25.6s) who got second.
The male under-20 200 metres went to Kevin Abbensetts in a time of 22.1s. Samuel Doris came second in 22.4s with David McDonald third in 22.5s.
Cassie George continued her good showing by qualifying for April event in the girl’s under-17 800 metres, winning in a time of 2:16.3s ahead of the AAG’s qualifying standard of 2:18s.
Ornesto Thomas of the newly formed University of Guyana club won the male under-20 800 metres event in 2:00.0s to squeeze past Grivon Grant (2:00.2s) with Mark Jarvis (2:00.5s) third.
Two time Carifta 1500 metres gold medalist Jevina Straker claimed the female under-20 event in 2:15.9s.
Alita Moore leaped 11.00m with a jump of 11.70 metres to win her event. Parish Cadogan won the triple jump event in 13.55 metres. Carifta 1500 metres bronze medalist Andrea Foster won the female 3000 metres in 11:21.4s.
Rupununi’s Samuel Kaiton was dominant despite failing to qualify for the Carifta games in winning the 5000m race in 17:38.6s.
The AAG will announce their final squad for the Bahamas event shortly.
