Police on the East Coast of Demerara are patiently awaiting the discharge from hospital of a Guyana Defence Force Second Lieutenant so that charges resulting from a fatal accident last Saturday could be instituted.
The officer, Allister Burke, was admitted to the Georgetown Hospital hours after the accident which resulted in the death of 13-year old Troy Fraser on the Airy Hall, Mahaicony Public Road.
Doctors are monitoring the officer who is reportedly complaining of chest pains which according to reports, are a direct result of the accident.
A source in the Mahaicony area also informed that the officer is having difficulty sleeping, since he appears to be emotionally devastated by the consequences of his reported recklessness.
“The boy’s mother used to do domestic work for his (the soldier’s) family, so the thing really hurting,” the source said.
The 13-year-old was picked up from the parapet in front of his home by the car driven by the Lieutenant and deposited in a ditch several yards away.
Reports are that the Army Officer and three of his friends were engaged in a drag race when he lost control of his Toyota Carina while negotiating a dangerous curve in the road and slammed into Fraser.
Police sources have disclosed that when tested for alcohol, the Officer was found to be over the prescribed limit.
Drunk driving has been the cause of the last two fatal accidents on the East Coast of Demerara.
Three weeks ago, a Toyota Tundra, reportedly driven by 17-year-old Gidram Rasiawan of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, slammed into a minibus on the Mon Repos Public Road killing the driver Godfrey Daniels and passenger Shondell Yaw.
In addition to being charged with causing death by dangerous driving, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, senior police officials on the East Coast of Demerara are assuring that they will be stepping up efforts to ensure that the roads remain safe throughout the Mashramani weekend.
One official stated that despite the increase in demand for police services for the various events that have already taken place and are to take place in the coming week, arrangements have been put in place to ensure that there are adequate ranks to perform all the relevant police duties.
“It will not diminish our responsibility to keep the district free from crime and traffic lawlessness,” the official told this newspaper.
