The inaugural Stag Beer West Side Mashramani knock-out competition kicked off in style on Sunday evening with the recently formed Slingerz FC recording a hard fought debut win while home team Den Amstel clipped Eagles FC wings 7-2.
Slingerz, boasting a number of former national players and the new kid on the West Dem bloc was made to work hard for their 1-0 win over Beavers in the feature clash of the evening witnessed by a colourful and appreciative crowd that made their presence felt when the home team was in action.
On field action commenced following the official opening ceremony which saw the tournament being kicked off by Digicel’s Marketing Director, Jacqueline James.
Slingerz controlled the position and pace of the game, playing a more systematic brand of football in their official game but Beavers, a long standing member of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) didn’t let the big names on the field deter them from trying to breach the Slingerz defense third, marshaled by Kester Jacobs and Ryan Crandon.
Not many chances were created by Beavers in the first half with Ronson Williams in goal for the new team having a trouble free night as the eventual losers basically collapsed deep defensively; Dwayne Jacobs led the Slingerz FC attack and he missed several chances to put his team ahead early in the piece.
The scores were 0-0 at the end of the first half but Slingerz fell a man short after their attacking mid-fielder Shavane Seaforth drew his second yellow card and as a result was given marching orders.
However, Slingerz played better in the second stanza and seemed more purposeful in their offense which started with Jacobs’ header from a corner hitting the cross bar.
They continued their attack on goal but Beavers remained resolute in defense up until 3 minutes to regulation time Jacobs used a few Cristiano Ronaldo imitated step-over dribbles to evade two defenders before unleashing a rocket like left foot shot just outside the 18 yard box to give his side the eventual game winner.
Digicel Marketing Director Jacqueline James and GFF President Franklin Wilson while meeting the players from the Den Amstel Football club prior to the start of their game against Eagles
Though the team would move on to play on March 1, their win was uninspiring according to their Coach Gordon Braithwaite who bashed his side’s approach to the game. Thanks to a Hat-trick from Travis Hartman coupled with a double from Gavin Graham and one each from Jeffery Pereira and Colin Wellington, Den Amstel banged their way past Eagles FC of Stewartville, 7 – 2.
Marvin Frank who scored in the 18th minute and Stephon Griffith (48th minute) were the two goal scores for Eagles.
Meanwhile, James whose company Digicel is one of the major sponsors of the tournament pledged their continued commitment to the sport on the West Demerara, adding that they are happy to be part of the event which serves as an important catalyst for its development.
Her words were echoed by President (ag) of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Franklin Wilson who himself once served as President of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA).
Wilson reminisced on the days of the Sweet-16 football tournament which was run during his tenure at the helm on the ‘West Side’ and stated that the event has the potential to supersede all expectations. He lauded Slingerz FC for organising the tournament to announce their presence in the sport and charged the participating teams to be disciplined and display a high level of camaraderie.
Also offering remarks was WDFA Vice President Christine Schmidt.
The tournament will continue on Friday February 22 at the Tuschen Community Ground when Seawall tackle Stewartville in opening play at 18:00hrs; the night capper featuring Uitvlugt Warriors and Young Achievers.
