UG student dies in bike crash

Being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) reportedly with head injuries and both legs broken, it was highly improbable that Lloyd Souvenir would have pulled through, even with the best medical help.
The 18-year-old first year University of Guyana (UG) student succumbed to his injuries around 11:30 Saturday evening, shortly after crashing his motorcycle on Aubrey Barker Street.
Initial reports were that the teen, who resided at 218 Essequibo Street, Lamaha Springs, was performing various motorbike stunts when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses stated that he was in the act when two parked vehicles simultaneously moved off and he was struck down.  An observer said that he was struck by a blue Toyota Allion.
However his step-mother, Marva Souvenir, said that she finds it hard to believe that the reports about the youth ‘stunt-riding’ are accurate.
“I wasn’t there so I am not sure what really transpired, but I think if he was doing those things the bike would have been more damaged.”
The woman informed this newspaper that the bike belonged to a friend of the dead teen, but from reports reaching her, only the handle was damaged and the “gas tank had a dent.”
The woman said that Souvenir left his home around 18:00hrs.
“He told his father that he was going right at Aubrey Barker Street. His friend picked him up with the same bike but from what I understand they went to a house party and he borrowed the bike and left there to go pick up some (other) friend.”
According to the woman, “his friend said they heard the thing (impact) and when they went through the crowd and check, they saw it was him.”
The woman, who said she is a nurse by profession, described the teen as very jovial individual and as one that always showed “love and kindness” to his siblings.
This newspaper understands that the teen’s biological mother, Vanessa Mendonca, had to be hospitalized yesterday morning.
“She taking on, so she pressure went up; he was she last child.”
What was stunning to most of the teen’s relative was the fact that he left his Blackberry Torch Two with his mother when he visited her the Saturday morning “is like he knew something was going to happen.”
His cousin, Kareem Mc Kinnon, said “If he goes to wash a cup, he takes the phone with him, he would ‘soap-up’ the cup, send a BBM then rinse it. He doesn’t part with that phone.”
“When we inquired about the phone last night (Saturday night) his friends said that he hadn’t any phone on him. But, when his mother came she said he told her to keep it the morning when he visited her.”
Souvenir last year completed sixth form at Bishop’s High School.
Souvenir was studying Public Management at UG’s Turkeyen Campus.
