Police in Brazil are trying to locate a native of the Portuguese-speaking territory who is believed to have fled back to her homeland following the brutal murder of businesswoman Elisangela Silva Figueara in her Bartica residence last week.
An official from the Brazilian Embassy here told Kaieteur News that the police are trying to ascertain whether the woman has returned to her homeland.
“Our police are trying to locate her address. We are trying to confirm if she returned to Brazil,” the official said. The senior official also suggested out of fear of being arrested, the woman might have re-entered Brazil by land rather than by plane.
Asked about reports that the suspect may also be wanted for a serious crime in her homeland, the official said that there were no previous reports about the individual.
The woman being sought is a former employee of Figueara’s and investigators have received reports that the two women had a dispute over a sum of money that the suspect had allegedly converted to her own use. They were reportedly heard arguing on the day that Figueara was last seen alive,
A post mortem performed on Wednesday revealed that the 35-year-old businesswoman was beaten and strangled.
Sources who knew both individuals said that the suspect had fled to Guyana a few years ago after committing a serious crime in Brazil. It is alleged that she returned to Brazil after wounding another woman at an interior location.
After spending a few months in Brazil, the suspect returned to Guyana and began to work with Figueara at Bartica.
Figueara reportedly left the woman to run her communications business for about a month, and when the businesswoman returned, she is said to have discovered that between $600,000 and $1M was missing.
The two were reportedly heard arguing two Thursdays ago, which was also the last time that Figueara was seen alive. Kaieteur News was told that the suspect was seen at a Bartica shop the following day but has not been seen since.
Figueara’s body was discovered last Sunday night in a bedroom at her Lot 97 Second Avenue, Bartica residence.
Her bed was blood-soaked and her tongue was protruding. There was also a gash on her head.
Neighbours last saw Figueara alive two Thursdays ago when she was sweeping her yard. That night, she was overheard arguing with another female and neighbours reportedly later observed that all the windows and doors of the residence were shut.
Three days later two Brazilian men who visited the residence regularly, forced open a bedroom window and discovered Figueara’s decomposing corpse.
The victim had operated a communications centre, a guest house and a money transfer service to Brazil.
