Justice Aubrey Bishop’s wife and children observe his casket at the funeral service at St George’s Cathedral yesterday.
In life, former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Aubrey Fitz Ronald Bishop was a towering figure and even death could not diminish his stature, evident by the glowing tributes extended by his colleagues and friends when they convened at the St George’s Cathedral, Georgetown to honour the life of the legal luminary, yesterday morning.
Indeed, every pew in the St George’s Cathedral was taken with some of the mourners forced to occupy seats under a makeshift tent erected at the western side of the edifice. Several legal luminaries attended and each paid homage to Mr. Bishop whose contribution in the legal arena was way beyond exemplary. Among those paying homage were Chancellor of the Judiciary, Carl Singh and Justice Desiree Bernard, who also read a message penned by President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, Rt Hon. Sir Dennis Byron. There were also tributes from lawyers, Emily Dodson, Ashton Chase and Professor Keith Messiah, former Chancellor of the Judiciary and Attorney General among others.
Dr J Edward Greene read the eulogy and reminisced on the life and accomplishments of Mr. Bishop while Reverend Otto Wade, Connexional President of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas delivered a touching sermon. Reverend Murtlene Dennis, Pastor Roderick J. M. Bishop and Christel
Justice Bishop’s casket is taken out of the St George’s Cathedral to the hearse after the funeral service yesterday.
Halls read from the scriptures, while Dr J Edward Greene delivered a touching eulogy. The children of the deceased, Roderic Bishop, Howard Bishop and Beverley Bishop-Cheddie also reminisced on the life of their father.
Mr. Bishop died last Wednesday night while being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was a former Chancellor of the Judiciary and was appointed a puisne judge in the High Court of Guyana in 1976 and a Justice of Appeal in 1987.
Mr. Bishop was also the Chief Justice in 1992 and Chancellor of the Judiciary in January 1995. He was called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in July 1963 and returned home in 1964 to embark on a career as a Barrister-at-Law at the local bar. He served, after retirement from the bench, as law professor at the University of Guyana.
Aubrey Bishop was awarded the Cacique’s Crown of Honour (CCH) and the Order of Roraima (OR) for service of an exceptionally high quality and beyond the normal call of duty in the administration of justice and in the field of law.
Bishop served football, cricket and table tennis as a player and served on the administration of football, cricket and the Guyana Olympic Association.
He leaves to mourn his widow, Carol and children, Roderic, Howard and Beverley.
