– all 17 contestants through to finals
The inadequacies of the Guyanese society in terms of hosting cultural, sporting and other outdoor events, especially out of Georgetown, was again exposed in a big way on Saturday evening at the Carib Soca Monarch semifinal competition which was held at the Area H ground In Rose Hall Town.
All was set for the much anticipated competition; the stage was prepared and artistes were all pumped up and ready to perform. Then the rain came and the ground was reduced to a swamp.
The stage also got a wetting, forcing some of the performers to express concern about the condition and their safety.
The competition which should have started at 20:00 hours, never commenced until around 22:00 hours with the Heat Wave band taking to the stage.
It was at this point after a long delay that MC Kirk “Chow Pow” Jardine announced that due to the conditions and looking at the safety of the contestants, the organisers had decided to cancel the competition, sending all 17 semifinalists through to the finals next Saturday at the National Park.
They will all have a chance to compete against reigning Soca Monarch Jumo “Rubber Waist” Primo for the coveted title.
Patrons, although disappointed, still had something to shout about as a truncated show was hastily organized, featuring most of the soca artistes present who were backed by the Heat Wave band.
The first artiste took to the stage around 23:00 hours. Some of the performances were good as the artistes took the opportunity to work up some steam to warm the crowd on the cold night.
Those impressing were Dwayne ‘King Shepherd’ Semple with More Wuk Up; The combination of Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts and Wilbur ‘B52’ Levans with “Tear De Roof”; Jonathan ‘Lil Red’ King singing “Never Stop”; Jermaine ‘Venom’ Mc Bean with “Storm DE Road”; Roger Bowen singing “Looking Fuh Bumpa”; Ernesta Nelson who dished out “Twirl”; Jamal ‘G Money’ Gittens with “Big Belly Verses Bumpa”; Rawleston ‘King Murphy’ Warde who sang “Invasion”, Orlando ‘Bonesman’ Johasen singing “Bun Dem” and Anthony ‘Chiney Man’ Abrams with “Pose”.
The much touted Adrian Dutchin was one of those who took it light with his composition “Jook”. Others through to the finals are James ‘Boss Stevens’ Gordon singing “Soca Mascara”; Quacy ‘Avalanche’ Coates with “Work It”; Colbert ‘Magga Man’ Dublin with “Shake”, Kwesi ‘Ace’ Edmonson doing “Same Thing”, Shondel London singing “Hard Wuk” and Compton ‘Mysterious’ Boyce with “We Don’t Know”.
