Dear Editor,
“Hope springs eternal in the human breast” and “The cat is to be belled but who’s to bell the cat”? Those were my thoughts on reading the plea in the recent letter headed “This situation is becoming unacceptably claustrophobic and debilitating”(Major General (ret’d) Joseph Singh’s letter on the recent attack on PNCR’s Oscar Clarke).
What is being described in the letter is a general disrespect for law and order, for the environment, and for standards of decency observed in days gone by. In other words, the destruction of the entire infrastructure.
Let us not forget that two post-Independence generations – three years away from half-a-century of being let go by our colonial masters – know no other way of life and therefore accept the present way as traditional and the norm.
We need to start a process of re-education, our leaders setting the example, then perhaps another ‘enlightened’ figure may come along and help to turn things around. Cheddi Jagan (Snr.) appeared in the late 1940s and changed attitudes of mind and put us on the map. Even in the mid-1950s, the average Brit had never heard the name ‘British Guiana’. I remember being introduced as being “from British New Guinea”, and supervisors at work referred to me as ‘the Jamaican girl’. By the 1960s, everyone had heard of ‘Jagan’s country’ – and many ladies thought him attractive.
As colonials, our citizens ‘knew their place’ and accepted the status quo – until Cheddi J. came along and pointed out the disparities in, and injustices of, the colonial system. Let us hope someone of his calibre comes along to restore some respectability, in answer the retired Major General’s prayer that we “……. be obedient to the Laws of Guyana; to love our fellow citizens; and, to dedicate our energies towards the happiness and prosperity of Guyana” So say most of us.
Guyana is a beautiful country, and if tourism is to be encouraged, we must make the effort. Our Kaieteur Falls may be regarded as one of the wonders of the world, our rainforests a joy to behold.
