Following a Kaieteur News’ article published last Thursday, reports of possible shortages in quarry material (stones) on the local market, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, has written to some of the major suppliers of this key construction material, enquiring about the causing factors.
“The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has recently been alerted that there is a shortage of quarry materials supplied on the market. We are therefore seeking a response on the limiting factors that are causing this shortage, and whether there are any interventions our office can make in aiding the expedition of the production process to improve the current supply,” the Minister’s letter read.
As of Wednesday, Toolsie Persaud Limited had resorted to rationing stones to its customers.
When Kaieteur News contacted places like Gafoor and BK International, they were stones were not in stock.
This had caused Toolsie Persaud Limited to come under pressure from those meeting deadlines.
This even caused a scene to be created in front of the Stone Department of the Toolsie Persaud Limited’s location in Providence.
Persons gathered to vent their anger on what they described as being “unfair”- some felt that the company was being unfair to them, as only “certain persons” were supplied with stones.
However, it was later explained to this publication by an official at Toolsie Persaud Limited, that the stones had to be “rationed” in such a way that everybody gets some.
There were several trucks parked in the compound awaiting an uncertain load of stone. Some of the drivers noted that they had parked their trucks in the company’s yard since the night before (Tuesday night), hoping that they would have gotten a load of stones, it soon turned into night and many of the trucks were still parked empty.
This publication was later told that those who had just started to build, and those who had small jobs to complete, were turned away while persons in the process of building their homes and those with major deadlines to meet were given preference.
The Minister in his letter also requested that monthly submissions of the production targets by these companies be made to the ministry.
