A 32-year-old businessman and his childhood friend have been remanded to prison on an allegation that they teamed up to break into a city restaurant and bar and removed almost $2 million worth of kitchen equipment.
Shemroy Gomes, of Lot 59 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and Guy Meryl, of Russell Street, Albouystown, allegedly stole three flat screen televisions, two stereo systems, two microwave ovens, two generators, a DVR recorder and 10 bottles of wine among other items after they broke into a restaurant and bar owned by Estwick North.
Both men pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Attorney at law Mortimer Coddette who represented for Gomes, told the court that his client knew nothing about the incident. The lawyer said that Gomes and Meryl are “childhood acquaintances” owing to the fact that they were brought up in Albouystown.
The attorney noted that on the day in question, Gomes, a hire car driver, saw Meryl standing on the roadside and “decided to give him a lift.”
Sometime after, Codette said the police held onto his client accusing him of the charge which is before the court.
The lawyer asked that bail be set at an affordable sum as he claimed that his client has no previous antecedents and is eager to be cleared of the issue before the court.
The prosecution however objected to bail and told the court that some of the articles were found at the home of the defendant.
Magistrate Judy Latchman ruled that the accused remain in custody until February 22. The matter was transferred to court 10 for trial.
