– season pedals off on Saturday
The 2013 cycling season is set to commence on Saturday and a packed programme of activities is anticipated for the remainder of the season.
Activities will get underway with the 20th Ricks and Sari Agro Industries 11-race Meet starting at 09:00hrs at the Inner Circuit of the National Park, Guyana’s only track of this nature.
This annual event is expected to attract all the leading riders from the various clubs around the country as they seek to get their respective quests for glory off to a positive start.
According to organizer, National Coach, Hassan Mohamed, an exciting day of races is anticipated as all the cyclists will be eager to start the year on a winning note.
Alonzo Greaves will look to defend his title in the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational race which he won in a time of One Hour, 19 Minutes, 10 Seconds in 2012.
However, it will not be an easy task for Greaves, as seasoned riders, the likes of Robin Persaud, Marlon Williams, Geron Williams and Enzo Matthews will all be harbouring similar thoughts.
The younger brigade, Paul DeNobrega, Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony and Raul Leal have shown what they can all do and will no doubt be the ones to watch out for. This quartet took the Caribbean by storm at the junior and juvenile levels in 2012 and will be the riders to beat in 2013 once they remain committed.
Michael Anthony will defend the Juvenile trophy won last year at this Meet while the resolute Junior Niles will start as the odds on favourite to successfully defend the Veterans Under-50 trophy.
As has been his aim for the past years, Mohamed has once again stated that he is seeking to raise the bar with regards to the number of Meets he organized in 2012; having achieved some 37 last year. He however notes that achieving a greater number of events can only be attained through solid support from corporate Guyana.
The national coach said companies and individuals have been very generous in sponsoring events under his purview over the years, but added that more sponsorship will mean additional avenues for the riders to showcase their talents and develop.
Representatives of Ricks and Sari Agro Industries are expected to be on hand to assist in the presentation of prizes to the top performers on Saturday.
