Police in the interior are still baffled by the discovery of two unidentified corpses over the past two weeks.
One of the corpses, which was decomposed beyond recognition, was discovered on Thursday on the Puruni Road, between Mara-Mara and Tiger Creek, while the other was found two weeks ago at Sand Hill.
According to reports, the body on the Puruni Road was discovered in a clump of bushes by a passerby who subsequently informed authorities in the district.
Such was the state of the body that the authorities were forced to bury it and mark the spot with a view to returning there for an exhumation so that a post mortem examination could be conducted.
“It decompose bad. De eyes all missing, like ‘John Crow’ done gone with it,” a source in the area where the body was found told this newspaper.
“The other one they found two weeks ago was bare bones. They can’t identify it,” the source added.
Investigators have not ruled out murder in last Thursday’s discovery.
However, they have so far received no clue that could assist them with the identity of either of the corpses, although there is some indication that the one found on Thursday might be a Brazilian.
“Fuss we de hearing was a Brazilian get kill, but because of de condition, dey couldn’t determine if is Black, White, Putagee or Chinee,” the source said.
A team of investigators is expected to return to the Puruni Road area this week with a pathologist to determine the cause of death.
The vastness of Guyana’s interior has made it difficult for effective policing, and with the influx of thousands of workers, including Brazilans, trekking to the lucrative goldfields, the situation is being further compounded.
Only recently, after long and careful deliberations, the Guyana Police Force finally split the large interior division into two separate divisions to be headed by two separate Commanders.
For quite a while it was argued that the current E&F Division, which covers Region One, Seven, Eight Nine and Ten, was too large to be effectively controlled by one Commander, whose office is located at the Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
Under the new structure, ‘E’ Division will now encompass, Linden, Kwakwani and other parts of Region Ten with the Commander being based at Linden.
The ‘F’ Division will cover the other interior locations including Region One, Sections of Region Seven, Regions Eight and Nine.
Senior Superintendent of Police Owen Trotz is heading the Region Ten (E) Division, while Senior Superintendent Ramsey is the Commander of the other Interior Division, and will be operating from Georgetown.
