K&S Chico Junior Under-13 Football championships
Three primary schools moved closer to championship honours when the inaugural K&S Chico Junior U-13 Football championships resumed at the Georgetown Football Club Ground Saturday afternoon last.
Beterverwagting defeated Uitvlugt 1-0 after Omari Glasgow netted in the 10th minute while Grove Primary defeated Company Road Primary 1-0. Randy Smart netted for the winners. Tucville Primary might still be bristling after they were deemed to have breached the rules, and subsequently sanctioned. As such, they did not show up for their match against Soesdyke Primary who won by default.
West Ruimveldt Primary were also in winners’ row, inflicting a 3-0 drubbing on St Gabriel’s Primary. Japheth Singh (7th), Brian Singh (28th) and Michael Ballack Oie (32nd) made the difference for the winners.
Unlike the early stages of competition when heavy rains had left the ground in a sodden state, the conditions on Saturday were football friendly and the young ball weavers were able to show off their skills. Indeed, despite their initiation to the sport at this level, they exhibited exemplary, albeit raw, skills that bode well for the sport.
The action continued yesterday with several semi-final encounters and the chaff is now being separated from the wheat in preparation for a gripping finals.
Eight teams are participating in the tournament which was to have concluded on January 1 last; torrential rains over the holidays had forced the organizers to put activities temporarily on hold. Apart from the lucrative prizes put up by the main sponsors, Beharry’s Company Ltd, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) on each team will receive BMX bicycles donated by Victoria’s Fashions of Church and Light Streets.
