Quick action by the Guyana Fire Service last night, helped save the Ministry of Culture Annex on Middle Street opposite the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle told Kaieteur News last evening that the fire service received the call some time around 21:00hrs. According to Gentle four units responded to the fire. Upon arrival at the building, Gentle said that the first floor was engulfed in smoke and there were visible flames. He said that the fire fighters entered the room and quickly managed to contain the blaze to one wall.
He said that the fire appeared to have started in an air conditioning unit. Gentle said that there was some level of water damage to the floor below. There was great collaboration between the police and the fire service, he added.
The police kept the crowd that had gathered away from the building and avoided any hindrance to the fire fighters.
Minister of Culture Dr. Frank Anthony, also thanked the fire service. He said that from the intervention they were able to contain the fire to one wall. Anthony said that there will be an investigation to determine the cause. The minister said that the Department of Sport and the President Youth award offices were affected.
He said that the Mash Secretariat also suffered some water damage. He said a few files have been damaged but they can be easily replaced. He said from what he understands it was the security officer who alerted the police.
