A woman who was found with 333 grams of marijuana at the Central Police Station after she was arrested and taken there on suspicion of drugs runnings, was on Friday jailed for two years after she was found guilty on a charge of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Althea Lewis, 29, a housewife and mother of two, of Lot 2 Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, was on trial before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
According to police prosecutor Corporal, Orin Joseph, on Wednesday January 11, 2011 the woman went to the New Amsterdam prison to visit her paramour who was incarcerated on a similar charge. At the time she was carrying a handbag.
However, before she entered the prison she was seen acting in a suspicious manner. The police were informed and quickly descended on the scene. Lewis was arrested and taken to the Central Police station where her belongings and person were searched. During the search the police found a suspicious looking substance in her lunch bag.
The substance was tested and weighed and found to be 333 grams of leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited substance. She was arrested and charged and subsequently found guilty. She was also fined $299, 900.
