In what can be described as an inaugural charitable gesture, the members of the revamped Family Commission yesterday took ‘glad tidings’ to nearly 30 needy families. The act saw Chairman of the Commission, Reverend Kwame Gilbert, backed by the Commissioners, visiting a number of deprived families primarily in Region Four and physically delivered hampers of mainly edible items.
The activity kicked off at 91 David Street, Subryanville, Georgetown, at a home shared by three elderly sisters. With ages ranging from 59 to 66 none of the sisters is currently gainfully employed and they are all now seeking to benefit from old aged pension.
This has however not been an easy task since according to one of the sisters, Jirathi Devi, she has tried twice for this year to apply for pension but the process has not yet materialised.
She however anticipates that her last attempt would bear fruit in the New Year. Another sister called Budnee, 66, has however started receiving hers.
In receiving the endowment yesterday, the youngest of the trio, Lilowtie Devi, said that the act of kindness meted out by the members of the Commission is very touching.
“It means a lot and I am so thankful for this kindness…It is so hard for us some times because we don’t have children or anybody to really help us out.” Their existence sees them sacrificing a lot in order to get-by, she said.
With satisfaction on their faces and evident zest to bring cheer to others, the members of the Commission then headed to Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown, where they descended on the home of Ann Estella Redman, also known as Cindy.
The former National Communications Network employee still exhibited signs of her ailment yesterday when the members of the Commission visited her home. She was at the time flanked by her son Joshua Redman and husband of 15 years, Courtland Redman who expressed much gratitude to the members of the Commission.
According to Reverend Gilbert, the recipients of the endowment were chosen on the basis of their financial situation. Each member of the Commission was tasked with identifying families worthy of assistance.
