When the 23rd edition of Kashif and Shanghai football tournament continues this evening at the Georgetown Football Club Ground (GFC) ground, four teams that are still to lay their hands on the championship trophy will be engaged in intense tussles, each vying for a change of fortunes.
The action commences with the Timehri Panthers playing BV Triumph at 18:30hrs followed two hours later by the feature attraction where Buxton United will clash with Winners Connection.
This is the 4th time that Winners Connection will compete for the prestigious accolade yet the top prize continues to elude them.
Coach, Wayne Bethune, who also doubles as a defence player, is confident that his men can rise to the occasion but he said that they are taking one step at a time starting from tonight. He said that alongside him in the defence is Kevin Sullivan, while Rawle Gittens and Chris Younge will shore up the mid-field and strike positions respectively. “Buxton United boasts good players but my boys have trained hard and will be pretty competitive in this game,” exhorted Mr. Bethune. He anticipates a good game.
Herbert McPherson is the coach of the Buxton United team and he is also oozing confidence. He said that the team did not enter the tournament last year but has been quite active in between. Indeed, the team is currently engaged in the GFF National League and has performed commendably after playing 7 games.
They have won 3 of those games while losing 2 with 2 drawn decisions. “I am with the team for just over a year and have been able to create positive changes while implementing systems to clinch this year’s honours,” a confident McPherson proclaimed.
He feels that he has just the right combination of players to achieve his goal. His strike force consists of Clive Andries and Pierre Joseph while former Alpha United mid fielder, Dwayne Jacobs, will function in a similar capacity. Add the likes of Warren Phillips and Les Charles Critchlow in the defence cordon and Coach McPherson feels he has just the right combination to exploit the opposition’s Achilles heel. Pressed for a prediction, the veteran coach opted to play it safe and vaguely responds, “We are prepared to do whatever it takes to win this game and then move on to the other round,” he stated.
With such confidence emanating from the two coaches, football buffs going to the venue could expect a grueling encounter and would not want to miss out on the action.
Meanwhile, patrons are asked to retain their ticket stubs for the draw which will take place at the halftime whistle. One lucky person will ride off with an 110CC motorcycle, while other prizes include hampers and cell phones among other goodies will also be on offer.
At the opening game, Dwayne Norton claimed the motorcycle after presenting his stub with number 259. Several other spectators won DVDs, cell phones, microwaves and food hampers among other prizes. Some of these patrons are still to uplift their winnings and the organizers have said that if those claims are not honoured by the next match day, those prizes would comprise another draw. “All of the prizes must be given to spectators; it’s a part of our commitment,” said Mr. Major, moments after the draw had concluded.
The teams are playing for large incentives with the winners carting off four million dollars, donated by Mohamed’s Enterprise, while the team finishing second receives one million dollars. The third and fourth places will cart off $750,000 and $500,000 respectively.
Additionally, the Most Valuable Player will win a luxury motor car, donated by Beharry’s Automotive Ltd, while coaches will be compensated for their hard work when the best among the lot receives one motorcycle. Other sponsors include Demerara Distillers Ltd and Ansa McAl.
