Dear Editor,
I am appalled at a report in your Tuesday Edition on an alleged rape of a 14 year old at Mabaruma in the North West District. I am further appalled at the deafening silence of the organizations which are supposed to be saying more than a mouthful by now on this issue. None of the politicians have said anything; none of the women’s rights groups have said anything.
This is ridiculous. This child was violated beyond an explanation. The police at Mabaruma chose to place the young man on $100,000.00 station bail. Maybe he should have been passed through a court. Cases like this one are usually dealt with in Georgetown. There are two flights out of Mabaruma every day. Is it because he has contacts in high places? The victim and her family are hurting, but, then, they are poor so maybe there is no need for the authorities to look into this matter.
Editor, this child needs to have a proper medical examination, she needs to be counseled. The perpetrator of this dastardly act should not be free on the road. WHERE ARE THE POLITICIANS WHO CLAIM TO CARE SO MUCH PRE- NOVEMBER, 28, 2011? ARE THEY SELECTIVE IN WHOSE CASES THEY STAND UP FOR? DID SHE HAVE TO BE RESIDENT IN REGION 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, OR 10 FOR HER ISSUE TO GET THEIR ATTENTION? Ever so often you read about politicians who journey (where they can drive to) to show solidarity with cane cutters, with nurses, with communities. WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
I now appeal for this child to be helped.
A very concerned mother.
