Guysuco Training Centre/ Port Mourant (GTC/PM) played unbeaten to win the first ever officially sponsored Balram Shane Volleyball Inter club competition which was played recently at the Albion Volleyball court.
The competition which was organised by Businessman Deonarine Balram of the Balram Shane General Store of Rose Hall Town and was played in memory of the Businessman’s father who was an ardent Sports fan was organised in collaboration with the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA).
The day’s action saw five teams taking to the court namely GTC/PM 1 and 2, Rollers, Albion and Port Mourant Jaguars while there were two female teams in GTC PM 1and 2.
On their way to championship glory GTC/PM made light work of their opponents to ease to victory and cart off the Balram Shane trophy and $20,000. In second place was Rollers Volleyball club of New Amsterdam with their one loss to GTC/PM and they received $15,000, Albion copped third and collected $10,000, while the once powerful Port Mourant Jaguars were tamed as the finished fourth. GTC/PM lost all their games and finished in the cellar. The two female teams received $5, 000 each.
Most Valuable male player was Quacy Matheson of the GTC/PM 1, while on the distaff side the honours went to Vashti Mohan.
The two outstanding players were presented with trophies compliments of President of the Berbice Volleyball Association, Gregory Rambarran.
The volleyball tournament was played alongside a cricket tournament which is played for championship honours between Albion and Port Mourant cricket clubs which is in its 13 year.
At the simple presentation ceremony, sponsor of the day’s event, Mr. Deonarine Balram thanked all the teams that participated in the competition and promised to make it bigger and better in the future.
He stated that in organising the cricket and volleyball competitions it is the family’s way of giving back to the community from where they garner their support. He also complimented cooperate sponsors and donors who came on board with contributions they have made over the last 13 years and look forward for their continued support in the years to come.
