Guyanese and Cuban nationals shared mutual sentiments of togetherness, growth and partnership last Saturday as they celebrated the 40th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two independent nations.
In an elaborate and elegant evening of dining and mingling on the lawns of the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara , President Donald Ramotar and His Excellency Raul Gortazar- Marrero, Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, expressed gratitude and hopes for stronger ties and greater partnership cohesiveness.
President Ramotar told the gathering of mostly Cuban nationals, local dignitaries and invited guests that it was 40 years ago Saturday that, “Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in a climate of hostility and enormous pressure took the courageous step to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba.”
He said that the Guyana- Cuba relationship, however, went further than that, citing days of the 1960’s when the Spanish-speaking nation was under attack and was faced with trading blockades. Ramotar, in his speech, thanked the Cubans for their contribution towards health care, education, sports, culture and science and technology.
While highlighting the many advances that the country has made, especially the 2009 establishment of the Ophthalmologist Hospital through the kind support of the Cuban government, Ramotar said it is testimony of the close relations enjoyed by the Guyanese and Cuban people.
The Guyanese leader said he is looking forward to continued advancements and growth as the two nations embrace each other in future endeavours.
Ambassador Gortazar- Marrero also expressed delight in the warmth and acceptance that the Guyanese people have shown. He expressed strongest wishes of congratulations on the 40th Anniversary on behalf of the Cuban government and the people of that nation.
Gortazar- Marrero reminisced on the hard times the Cuban nation faced due to diplomatic restrictions by North America and commended Guyana as well as the other Caribbean nations who took that brave step to create relations with the nation. He said that despite the attempts of the economic giants to isolate Cuba, nations like Guyana stood strong and steadfast in enduring diplomatic relations.
He said for the Cuban process, Guyana has shown shared aims and respect. On December 8, 1972, he said, diplomatic relation was signed by the two nations and throughout that time, the Guyanese people have expressed their value and shared aims towards Cuba. For that, the Ambassador said, Cuba is sincerely grateful.
Looking toward success and growth between the two nations, President Ramotar and Ambassador Gortazar- Marrero toasted to continued diplomatic togetherness.
