Justice Navindra Singh sentenced a “deportee” to 14 years in prison, yesterday, after he admitted to killing his aunt, Latchmin Kumari Abrams, back in February 2007. The deportee, Dexter Moseley, had pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter earlier in the month.
Abrams was found dead in her bed at her home in Speightland, Lower Kara Kara, Linden. The murder was reportedly committed between February 5 and February 6, 2007. At the time the accused was living with the deceased.
State Prosecutors Renita Singh and Konyo Sandiford presented the State’s case, while Moseley was represented by attorney, Latchmie Rahamat.
Justice Singh in addressing the court told Moseley that he committed a very heinous crime. He added that Moseley committed the crime against his aunt; a woman who had taken him into her home after he was deported.
The judge told the court that he had started his sentencing from an initial 22 years. He explained that six years were taken off due to the time Moseley had already spent in prison. An additional two years were taken off for his guilty plea.
According to a neighbour, he received a phone call from Moseley some time between 03:30h and 04:30h on February 6, who told him (the neighbour) that he saw a man going in Abrams’ house with a cutlass.
The neighbour immediately summoned the police after which, he peered from his window and saw two persons in the yard, but could not recognize them. They later turned out to be Moseley and a tenant (who was occupying the downstairs flat).
Around 06:30h, the tenant and the neighbour decided to check on the woman and discovered that she was dead. The police were summoned for the second time and they responded.
