Leon Belony was elected to the helm when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) held a special forum to complete election of office bearers, aborted a few months ago for the want of a quorum, at the Maltenoes Sports Club yesterday afternoon.
National Scrabble Champion, Abigail McDonald, was elected to serve as Vice President while her predecessor, Fred Collins is the new Secretary. Colin Chichester, previously a committee member, has been elected to serve as the Treasurer while Prudence Edwards is the Organizing Secretary. Moen Gafoor is asked to serve in the capacity of Public Relations Officer and the three Committee Members are Julian Skeete, Orlando Michael and Ulric Harris.
Mr. Belony was delighted to have been elected and conveyed gratitude to the members for exhibiting such faith in his ability. He admitted that the GASP had recently undergone a crisis in the installment of an executive body to propel the sport forward but opined that a crisis is not necessarily a bad thing.
In fact, he believes such situations should really be viewed as an opportunity to make the requisite adjustments for the better of the sport. The new President admitted that the tasks ahead are indeed arduous but said that he has faith in his fellow executives who are all prepared to work as a team.
Meanwhile, discussions have already commenced on strategies to broaden the sport into the schools and communities and the new executives will soon install committees to address this and other developmental initiatives presently on the front burner. Mr. Belony said that he will soon set the date for the inaugural meeting of his executives.
