Marian Academy’s Shemroy Holder 41st minute strike proved enough to decide the winner of the final in this year’s Courts Pee Wee Schools Football final which was played yesterday, at the Thirst Park ground.
Playing against a tough Tucville unit and in front of a fair-sized crowd, the North Georgetown based side had to withstand a determined effort from the pre-match favourites, before Holder booted in
from close range following a scrimmage off a corner that saw poor judgement from the Tucville players who failed to clear the ball after gaining possession in their penalty area.
The match started with both teams very early on the offensive and had the crowd on the edge of their seats with Diarra Thomas and Holder putting the opposition’s defence under pressure.
Thomas’s fierce right-footer produced a brilliant save from the Tucville custodian, while Tucville’s star player Simeon Hackett’s mesmerising dribbles had the Marian Academy backline scrambling to keep the contest even.
The two teams went to the break with none able to take the ascendancy and everything to play for in the second period.
After a similar pattern of play where chances were created, but poor finishing on some occasions and competent goalkeeping put paid to the constant forays it took one instance of indiscipline from Tucville to erase their prospect of winning the title.
That brief example of carelessness was enough for the hungrier Marian Academy side to take advantage of and claim the title.
In the playoff for third place, West Ruimveldt defeated North Georgetown 2-0 with Michael Oie (17) and Japeth Singh 40th minute strikes, being the decisive factors.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, Marian Academy defender Matthew Klautky was voted Most Valuable Player, while Tucville’s Hackett was named Top Goal Scorer.
Marian Academy’s Akeelo Haynes was named the Best Goalkeeper, while the other individual prize of Most Disciplined Team went to F.E. Pollard.
The top four teams were awarded with Trophies and a Desktop Computer along with two Coby Boom Boxes. Two Boom Boxes were also awarded to each participating School.
In other results, St. Margaret’s finished fifth ahead of the St. Gabriel’s after they defeated them 1-0 with Shaquan Stephens registering the lone goal.
Redeemer defeated Ketley for eighth place by the same score line with Shemar Dover’s 28th minute strike separating the two teams.
St. Pius got past Enterprise 2-1 through goals from Beveney McGarrel and Marcus, while Izannah Rogers scored the consolation strike for Enterprise. F.E. Pollard needled Sophia with Meshack Softleigh scoring, while South Ruimveldt sank St. Sidwell’s 2-0. Scoring for St. Sidwell’s were Raheem Hamreys and Shenaar Smith.
Success Academy gained a walkover from Green Acres, who did not show up for the entire knockout round. In attendance to witness the finals were Representatives of Platinum sponsor Courts (Guyana) Inc. Marketing Executive Molly Hassan, Marketing Officer Kester Abrams and Director of Customer Services Rawle Dundas and they all made remarks.
