Dillon Heyliger snared 5 for 33 off 9 overs and skipper Royan Federicks stroked an unbeaten 82 as South Essequibo defeated East Bank Essequibo by 9 wickets to win the Busta sponsored Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) 50-over title last Sunday at the Imam Bacchus Ground, Affiance Essequibo Coast.
East Bank won the toss, decided to bat and were pegged back by accurate bowling from Dillon Heyliger and Vijay Surajpaul who reduced them to 55-5 before Brian Hubbert 28 (1×4 2×6) and Jason Heyliger 25 (3×4) staged some sort of a recovery with a 45 run 6th wicket stand.
However when they were dismissed in quick succession, the lower order found the bowling too difficult to handle and East Bank were bowled out in 35.5 overs for 133. Surajpaul took 2-4 off 6 overs.
Royan and Norman Federicks gave South a solid start posting 49 for the opening stand. Hemachan Persaud (1-20) finally got the breakthrough when had Norman caught at mid wicket for 17(4×4).
Surajpaul then joined Royan, the two featuring in an unbroken 90 run second wicket stand that sealed the win for South. Royan faced 43 balls, hit 12×4 and 3×6 while Surajpaul finished on 36 coming off of 23 balls (3×4 1×6).
Heyliger was named man-of-the-match while South received the winner’s trophy and $50,000. East Bank took home a trophy and $20,000. Surajpaul was rewarded for achieving the highest individual score in the competition, 102 vs Central.
Royan Fredericks received the prize for the best bowling figures (5-23) vs North. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Managing Director of Guyana Beverage Inc. Robert Selman said he was pleased with the way the tournament was organized and promised to continue supporting the game in the County.
ECB President Prince Holder congratulated both teams while thanking the sponsors. He urged the players to continue training hard.
