Marica Dick, representing District 15, rode a brilliant race, finishing in 48 Minutes 39:00 Seconds to capture the honours when the cycling segment of the National School’s Cycling, Swimming & Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday morning.
The race commenced at the Ocean View Hotel, Lilliendaal ECD and saw the female competitors going up to the Vigilance Police Station before returning to the starting point for the finish, a distance of 25km.
District 11 representative, Shawnna Doris clocked 48 Minutes 45:04 Seconds to finish second while Christeen Matheson of District 6 closed off the podium positions after registering a time of 52 Minutes 43:06 Seconds.
In the male segment of the race, a distance of 40km, Raul Leal of District 13 retained his form to cross the finishing line in 1 Hour 01 Minute 53 Seconds just ahead of fellow national rider Michael Anthony of District 10 who clocked 1 Hour 02 Minutes 04 Seconds while Shaquel Agard, also of District 10 rode in third with a time of 1 Hour 03 Minutes 05:01 Seconds. Cove and John was the turn back point for the males.
Both first place finishers, Dick and Leal assumed the front runner position from the start and refused to relinquish the lead. While Dick’s victory was almost effortless, Leal had to stave off a rampaging Anthony whose determination stood out on the upward journey.
It was only on the return stage that Leal was able to call on his reserves to cross the finishing line ahead of his nemesis by mere seconds.
Dick, Doris, Leal and Anthony continued where they had left off in the recently concluded Inter Guiana Games where they had defeated all and sundry in the journey from Lenora to Niemes WCD, to resume their intense rivalry.
