A 22-year- old woman is in police custody aiding with investigations into the death of a 45-year-old shopkeeper. Police said that Christopher Craig, called “Yankee”, was found dead in front of a shop at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni around midnight on Saturday last.
The man’s reputed wife is alleged to have stabbed him after an altercation. Craig, a father of two, resided at Lot 95 John Street Campbellville with his wife and two sons.
His wife, Jackie Collins told Kaieteur News that she received news of her husband’s death shortly before 07:00hours on Sunday. According to her, a woman called her cell phone asking if she had spoken to her husband the night before.
Collins said she inquired from the stranger the purpose of her questions and she replied, “’cause he get stab and he dead.”
The dead man’s wife said that the caller did not identify herself nor did she give details surrounding her husband’s death. “She only tell me that how he scream she name couple time and when she come out, she see he get stab.”
Kaieteur News was told that the 22-year-old woman in police custody was living with the deceased. She reportedly told police investigators that she was in the home at the time of the incident and has no idea who may have killed Craig.
This publication was however told that the woman was pulled in after she allegedly confided to a relative, that she had stabbed Craig after he slapped her. “She telling the police that she was inside the house at the time and she only know about the stabbing after feeling the blood on his jersey.”
“She said outside was dark and she couldn’t see anything, but after he call her about three times she run outside. She said she go where she heard the noise and then she see him on the ground.”
It was then the woman reportedly took the man up in her arms and felt the wetness on his clothes. The woman reportedly raised an alarm and people started to come around.
Another report was that the woman reportedly told a family member that Craig had slapped her after an argument and in a bid to scare the man, “she pick up the knife and fire a juk, not really to kill him.”
Collins said that she had made contact with her husband on Saturday to wish him a happy birthday. The woman said the conversation was casual as they spoke about family life and the kids. She said her husband had been living in Guyana for 15 years now and was working for the majority of the past three years in the interior. He recently told her that he started up a shop in the interior, she said.
