…Prof Samad absent from convocation
Guyanese cricket legend, Clive Lloyd, addressed the 2012 convocation of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) on Saturday evening. This was the 12th Convocation.
On the occasion, 180 students were conferred with their Certificates, Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Degrees in various fields. Thirty
students graduated from the Natural Sciences Faculty; 58 from the Social Sciences Faculty; and 73 from Education and Humanities.
Muniram Purnwasi received the Highest Grade Point Average and was the Valedictorian. He was awarded with the Republic Bank award for Best Graduating Student. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics.
However, the bigger story was in the form of a question which was on everyone’s mind: “Where was Professor Daizal Samad?” Just as notable as his absence was the fact that no Director’s Report was presented or read, although the item was on the graduation programme booklet.
Kaieteur News understands that Dr Samad, whose contract as UGBC Director came to an end on October 31, 2012, is currently on leave. Mr Phillip Da Silva is acting Director of the institution.
Pro- Chancellor, Dr Prem Misir, said that he did not know what had happened to Samad and he was surprised that he did not show up to give the Director’s report. Acting Director, Phillip Da Silva, too, was surprised that Prof Samad did not show up and could not have vouched for his absence. Efforts to solicit a comment from Registrar, Mr Vincent Alexander proved futile.
While the UG council is expected soon to pronounce on the issue and appoint a new
Director of UGBC for which several persons have applied, Prof Samad says that he will be “honoured to serve again”.
