They say that nothing beats perseverance and Colin Chichester exemplified that belief when he ended a prolonged absence from the podium to take the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged the Diwali Open Championship at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands, yesterday afternoon.
Chichester amassed 5 points and a positive spread of 422 to turn in better figures than national champion, Abigail McDonald who finished on 4 points and a positive spread of 512. Leon Belony closed off the podium spots after amassing 4 points and a positive spread of 328 while Orlando Michael scored 4 points and a positive spread of 145 to finish 4th. The win did not earn him a podium spot but he managed to clinch the special prize for the best player outside of the top ten.
Chichester stamped his authority in the pre-lunch sessions defeating Kamta Ramnarine (82), Wayne Cave (40), Michael Benjamin (182) and Julian Skeete (46). He stumbled just after the lunch break with a loss to McDonald (135) but rebounded with decisive victories over Belony (10) and Michael (96). Along with Chichester, McDonald defeated Ramnarine (351), Wayne Cave (40), Colin Chichester and Julian Skeete (76). She dropped games to Belony (36) and Michael (34).
Belony’s other victims were James Krakowsky (69), Skeete (109) and Benjamin (168). He also lost to Michael (44) and Chichester (10). Michael could consider himself somewhat unlucky after turning in a commendable performance up to the final sitting. Up to then he had defeated Cave (168), Belony (44), Benjamin (9) and McDonald (34). Set to ascend the podium he was disappointed after Chichester pulled off a miracle victory with a last play bingo. Michael only comfort was the acquisition of the prize for the best player outside of the top 10.
Meanwhile, plans are in train to hold the Annual General Meeting on Sunday November 25 next at the Malteenoes Sports Club and members are asked to take note. Further, players will convene at the very venue for practice sessions on Thursday evenings starting at 19:00hrs.
