Former Local Government Minister, Kellawan Lall, is tipped to coordinate the state media, and as a consequence will oversee the National Communications Network (NCN) and Government Information Agency (GINA), officials have said.
Lall, who was until recently Guyana’s Ambassador to Brazil, is a seasoned campaigner for the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic. He was cleared to be this country’s envoy to the neighbouring country after months of delay in 2011.
According to officials, Lall will head up a special unit that has been created at the Office of the President to manage government’s public relations.
In addition to GINA and NCN, it is likely Lall to oversee the Guyana Chronicle and the reformation of the image of the ruling party.
There have been increasing tensions between government and the private media amidst allegations of corruption.
Last November, the ruling party performed its worst in the General and Regional Elections, after nearly two decades at the helm of the country.
Lall once served as Political Advisor to the President and was asked to join the Cabinet as Local Government Minister after the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) won the elections again in 2006.
Merlin Udho’s, the former Ambassador to Suriname, has already been named to replace Lall in Brazil.
