– porter wounded, killers flee with $750,000
Bandits shot a 57-year-old truck driver dead and wounded a porter after ambushing a delivery truck at Busby Dam, East Bank Demerara, at around 18:00 hrs yesterday.
Aga Khan, of Lot 20 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, was shot at close range in the right side of the neck, reportedly after he had handed over a bag containing some $750,000 to one of the three robbers who had forced him to stop on the deserted roadway.
The father of three died shortly after being rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital. Mervin Marcus, a porter of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was shot in the right shoulder and was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being treated at the East Bank facility.
Another porter who was on the same vehicle escaped unhurt. Detectives took him back to the scene and took a statement from him.
The suspects escaped on foot into Second Street, Grove.
Police recovered a single 9mm round under the driver’s seat. They believe that the bandits fired one bullet which passed through the left side of Khan’s neck and then struck Marcus.
The victims are employees of Eduns Poultry and Hatchery, located in Busby Dam, a short distance from where the bandits struck. They were returning to their employer’s farm with proceeds of the day’s sales of eggs when they were attacked.
Poultry farmer, Mr. Saeed Edun, proprietor of Edun’s Poultry and Hatchery, told Kaieteur News that his employees had travelled to Georgetown to sell his produce. He said that he had expected them earlier but that they were delayed after the vehicle suffered a puncture.
Kaieteur News understands that the uninjured driver told police that they had just turned into Busby Dam when a man stood in front of the truck, forcing the driver to slow down. He alleged that the two other bandits then clambered onto both sides of the cab in which both porters were sitting.
One of the bandits reportedly then said “pass the money”, and Marcus reportedly then handed the men the money-bag.
One of the assailants then fired a shot before fleeing on foot down a nearby street.
The attack was witnessed by a driver who lives in the same street.
The man told Kaieteur News he had just turned into Busby Dam when he observed two men ‘slinging’ on a truck some 50 yards ahead on him. He also recalled that the vehicle was swaying on the roadway.
He said that he heard a banging sound and assumed that the men were striking the doors of the vehicle to make the driver stop, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop on the roadside.
The resident said that as he drove closer, the men clambered down and fled into a nearby street. He said that he pursued the bandits for a short distance before returning to the truck. By then, one of the porters had clambered out of the vehicle and informed him that Khan had been shot.
The driver said that on the porter’s insistence, he took the injured men to their employer’s poultry farm, located a short distance away. Khan and the injured Marcus were rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, where Khan passed away shortly after.
Khan’s brother, Sharief Khan, said that his brother had been employed at the poultry farm for about two years.
