Fire of unknown origin yesterday completely destroyed the one-flat wooden three bedroom house of popular Butcher, livestock and cash crop farmer, Garfield Skeete called “Chuck”. The blaze started around 11:00 hrs.
Skeete 39, lived at the Lot 40 King Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice premises with his 32-year old wife, Renuka Hindure, and their daughter Dianne Skeete, four.
Skeete stated that at the time of the fire, he was out selling pork, a usual practice in the neighbouring villages.
He got a call on his cell phone that his house was on fire and immediately hurried home only to see the building engulfed in flames.
It was an unbelievable sight, he said. He could not give an estimate of the losses, but said it is in the millions of dollars.
The distraught man stated that his house was fully furnished.
He stated that he has been living at the premises for over seven years. The house belongs to his brother, Wesley, who is overseas.
The man said that although the electricity was disconnected from his house due to a dispute he had with the Electricity Company, he suspected that the cause might be electrical in nature.
He stated that although the wire was disconnected, they would come together periodically, causing sparks. He said that he reported the problem many times to the Guyana Power and Light, but nothing was done.
His wife, Renuka, broke down in tears when she looked at what was left of their comfortable home. The woman, who was being comforted by relatives and friends, stated that she was on the bridge chatting with a friend while her daughter and nephew had gone next door to pick coconuts.
She said that she was alerted about a fire in the house and when she looked around she saw black smoke emanating from the building.
The woman said she started to scream, and neighbours, realizing what was happening, quickly arrived and formed a bucket brigade.
However they could not do much, as the fire quickly started to rage.
The woman echoed what her husband had stated, that the house was well furnished with two wall dividers, two television sets, VCR, music system, washing machine and microwave among other things.
The Guyana Fire Service was summoned and responded with two trucks while a Land Rover from the nearby Rose Hall Estate also went to the scene.
