The Alliance For Change (AFC) yesterday announced its consideration to propose a “cut” of the amount of monies allocated to the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) during the upcoming year, 2013.
Party leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, noted that the consideration to consult A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) so as to collaboratively pass the motion of budget deduction in parliament comes in light of the “rampant corruption” ongoing within the NDIA.
To support his statement, Ramjattan pointed to the recent audit report which disclosed numerous cases of corruption and resulted in attempts being made by the Government to sweep the issue under the carpet.
The party leader was adamant that measures need to be put in place to address the outright mismanagement of state funds and lapse in standard procedures.
“When you have a corrupt authority you are forced, through the power you have in the majority, to cut the administrative budget.”
Ramjattan stated that the opposition has no other choice, in this regard, but to cut the budget.
“Of course they (government) will cuss us down and say we will deny people bread and butter, but what… Do you do see the corruption happening in front of your face and do nothing? I am warning the NDIA, as one of AFC leaders here, that we may very well do the NCN approach to NDIA come 2013.”
The parliamentarian asserted that corruption will continue to exist in the NDIA as the government has taken the position of chastising the messenger thus “destroying the message.”
He noted this can result in serious implications for audits in every governmental institution, as auditors may become sceptical.
