De Jesus Narine is currently before the court two counts of simple larceny and escaping from police custody.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges when he appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine–Beharry.
The charges state that on October 29, Narine stole a quantity of clothing worth over $300,000 from a boutique owned by Diana Bowen and a cellular phone belonging to Akash Mohammed and valued at $30,000.
It is alleged that on October 29, Akash Mohammed, who works at a boutique within the Hilton Crest Hotel, fell asleep leaving his cell phone on the counter and the doors of the business place open. Narine allegedly went into the store and stole the items and when Mohammed awoke he found the clothing and his cell phone had gone missing. However checks of a closed circuit television camera reportedly showed the defendant removing the articles. Narine was later arrested and placed in police custody, where he later escaped.
Prosecutor Wynette Hubbard asked that Narine be remanded into police custody as there is a likelihood that he may not attend court if granted bail. Narine was then remanded until November 11.
