Eighteen-year-old Jamal Abrams, who is accused of “snatching” a Samsung 4G cell phone worth $40,000 from Delta Airlines flight attendant, Krista File, was placed before the court yesterday on a simple larceny charge
The allegation is that on Saturday last, Abrams snatched a mobile phone belonging to the United States national, while in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market.
File was reportedly standing near Demico House when she took out her cell phone and attempted to take a picture of Stabroek Market. The defendant is said to have “snatched” the gadget from her hands and ran off with it. The woman immediately raised an alarm and chased the defendant down the street. Her alarm alerted police on a nearby patrol who apprehended the suspect. A search was carried out on the defendant’s person and the cell phone was recovered.
However, Abrams denied the allegation when he faced Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine -Beharry.
The teenager told the court that “De lady de lef she phone in Demico toilet and I pick it up.”
He was subsequently ordered to undergo counselling with the USAID’s Skills and Knowledge for Youth Employment (SKYE) project.
