As Tourism Awareness Month commences, the event began with yesterday’s launch of Explore Guyana 2013 magazine and calls for more investment in eco-tourism to further develop and promote tourism.
The event was held at the Mangrove Heritage Site, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara. In attendance were President Donald Ramotar, Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali, President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (ag) Daniel Gajie, Director of Tourism Authority Indranauth Haralasingh, members of the

diplomatic corps and other special invitees.
President Ramotar described the Tourism sector is a growth pole in the economy and stressed that it has to be further developed.
Noting the sector creates many jobs, the President said, “We choose to go on the path of community tourism because it is the best benefit for our country.”
He noted that the ultimate goal is to have 80 percent of the money spent by tourists remain in the country, hence, the local tourism industry needs to be community-based.
Minister Ali noted that many meetings were held with the heads of various diplomatic missions in Guyana and the tourism sector is pleased with the support given.
He added that the private sector, sports and mining sectors have been developing the tourism sector.
