Guyana kept their hopes alive of qualifying for the next stage of the Caribbean Cup competition when they defeated Curacao by the odd goal in three at the Beausejour Stadium, last evening.
Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson netted the first half double for the Guyanese who again missed numerous opportunities and could not find the back of the nets in the second stanza. Curacao was able to narrow the advantage by scoring one of their own.
The Jaguars came out blazing and Richardson rocked the nets in the 3rd minute to signal that Guyana meant business coming off their loss to St. Vincent & the Grenadines two days ago.
Richardson was again the player to double the score for Guyana after being brought down in the box in the 43rd minute; he converted himself to see Guyana to the break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
While the Jaguars intended to increase their advantage in the second half, plans did not go the way they wanted. They were not able to trouble their own score but Curacao pulled one back.
For the Guyanese, Trayon Bobb replaced Sheldon Holder in the second half with Anthony Abrams coming in for Mills in the 80th minute.
The win secured Guyana’s first points of the group, while Curacao suffered their second loss in as many matches having lost to home team St. Lucia who engaged St. Vincent in the feature game last evening at the same venue.
Guyana will have to win their final game against St. Lucia tomorrow evening in order to qualify for the next round as only the top two teams will advance. St. Vincent will open proceedings tomorrow evening against Curacao.
Starting team for Guyana – Ronson Williams (Goalkeeper), Kelvin Smith, Charles Pollard, Walter Moore, Colin Nelson, Konata Manning, Christopher Nurse, Vurlon Mills, Dwight Peters, Sheldon Holder and Gregory Richardson.
Meanwhile, Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz commented: ý “The long time together is starting to tell on the team but these lads have an uncanny ability to switch on in the big moments and I am backing them to do just that.
“We created 15 chances and scored 2 our finishing today left a lot to be desired. We made a mountain out of a molehill and by not taking our chances we made the game too close for comfort. “
ý “Facing St Lucia at home is an uphill task and one that as professionals we embrace and eagerly face.”
