Police Stations in the West Berbice, Number Three Sub-division of ‘B’ Division have gone through a lot of transformation with a number of new initiatives in an effort to improve the Force’s image and the way things are done. The Sub-Division, which is now headed by Assistant Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, has been a buzz of activities.
A training programme for ranks in the sub-division was held in the Boardroom of the Regional Democratic Office Fort Wellington, recently. This training is designed to enhance the ability of Police men and women in the execution of their duties and helping them in general capacity building.
Among the lecturers was Director of the University of Guyana, Tain Berbice Campus, Professor Daizal Samad. Samad in his discourse told the gathering that they should not only accept what they have but reach for the sky.
The eminent professor told the gathering, which included Police Officers, Special Constables, Rural Constables, Neighbourhood Police and Community Policing Group members, that they should be proud and happy people to choose a profession that serves people and they should try their best to make that their number one priority.
The Professor stated that learning is a very powerful weapon which is used to destroy illiteracy and create knowledge.
The Professor spoke of his passion for education and encouraged those in attendance to encourage others to come on board and be a part of the Police Force.
Professor Samad offered free training to those present in the areas of general writing, writing statements, written and oral communications, Information Technology and hygiene. They will also be taught the fundamentals of proper records keeping.
He stated that lunch will be provided for those attending the training sessions which should commence shortly.
The ranks were advised not to allow corruption to be spoken in the same breath with their profession and to minimize the use of force. They were also encouraged to ensure that they deal with domestic violence matters in a very confidential manner and to foster and maintain a cordial and healthy relationship with the public.
Commander of ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Dereck Josiah complimented his ranks for their deportment and expressed satisfaction towards the condition of their working environment.
He called on both Regular Ranks and Neighbourhood Police to participate in drills which will help them become focused and sharp and also enable them to maintain a healthy and discipline lifestyle.
He told them that the “Police should go to the people and organize sports, plan activities of such nature that the public would become involved, so we can build bridges.”
A computer system which was donated to the Fort Wellington Police Station, the Headquarters of the Number Three Sub-Division, was handed over by Assistant Commissioner Josiah. This was made possible through the initiative of Professor Samad and Assistant Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan.
Two new scout groups were also formed in the Division. One of the groups was formed at the Fort Wellington Police Station. This group which is headed by scout leaders Ashanti Amsterdam, Crystal Carmichael and Moresha D’Oliviera, has planned a series of activities for the rest of the year. Two adult scouts Moresh D’Oliveira and Kevin Rampersaud are also currently benefiting from a driving course which is being held twice weekly.
Another group comprising of 28 youths was also launched at the Blairmont Police Station, West Bank Berbice. This group is headed by schoolteacher Miss Shazeena Seetayah.
Stations Management Committees have been resuscitated and put in place at the respective station in the divisions. These committees have already started to function and plans are well advanced for the construction of canteens and recreational facilities at both the Fort Wellington and Blairmont compounds.
