The Indian Bollywood Expo is now in Berbice. A simple launching ceremony was done on Friday in New Amsterdam. Mr. Saveen, of India, who is in charge of the event, stated that exclusive Indian wear can be found at the expo. “We are doing our best and I hope everyone comes,” he said.
Saris, shalwars, kurta and kurta shirts, Indian jewelry and footwear, as well as Indian cosmetics among other original items out of India can be found at the expo.
Ms. Shoba Ramlall of S&R Events is the promoter of the expo.
Regional and business entity officials pose with the organisers of the Bollywood Expo at the Berbice launch.
Regional Chairman of Region Six, David Armogan, who was present at the launch, praised the promoters and Mr. Saveen for bringing such an event to the Ancient County and stated that any business venture that comes to the Region is indeed a blessing, “because the more businesses we have in Berbice, the better it is for the development of our region and especially when you are coming from another part of the world. This is good for the kind of variety we want in the region too because our people want a variety of materials to choose from.”
Armogan mentioned that the event is just in time for Deepavali which will soon be celebrated amongst Hindus.
“Competition is also very good for the people dealing in Berbice with these kinds of outfits and therefore I hope that the prices here are competitive, because competition always tends to drive down the prices and our people are the beneficiaries when the prices go down.”
Member of Parliament, Faizal Jaffarally applauded S&R Events for bringing the event to Guyana.
He noted that Guyana and India, over the years, have developed a long and fruitful relationship.
“Today, we are proud, as Indo-Guyanese, with that connection to India.”
He implored the promoters, “to not only import and bring clothing from India. We need to look at the possibility in investing in a factory where clothing can be manufactured right here in Guyana, and with such a venture, the cost will result in great reduction and create employment for Guyanese.”
This is the first time India Expo has come to Guyana and it is expected to be an annual event. The exposition was opened on October 11 in Georgetown, and has been well received by patrons, many of whom find the prices affordable in comparison to some popular local stores.
Berbicians can now access the Expo until November 8 above the Metro Store building on Main Street, New Amsterdam.
